Justine is one of our teachers in the Online Sewing Lessons.
Here is her sewing story;
Sewing skills run in the family. I was fortunate enough to have the first 5 years of my life living Nth Borneo Sabah, with that ex-pat lifestyle I had a mother who loved fashion but couldn't buy clothing to suit the lifestyle. Many boat trips to fabric stores later, and matching Mum /daughter/son outfits, my mother became quite an accomplished dressmaker and teacher!
My first outfit I ever made was for my childhood best friend Caroline, she rode up the street in my number and it slowly fell off!
Whilst going through school and hard up for money, decided with Mum's approval turning old chenille bed covers/ David Jones sheets into outfits for my Regatta/Wests/Fisherman's Wharf and the Broadie jaunts! A good hip belt turned any of my creations into a piece worth the notice!
Along with doing these creations I slowly gathered my experience! So much so I was commissioned by some of my gorgeous teachers at Brigidine to make them clothing that they actually wore to work!
My mother got into appliqué mainly doing Australian native flora and fauna, macrame, batik, copper art, knitting are some of Mum's other talents too! I picked up on the appliqué work which was sought after as well by my teachers!
The appliqué work got me into Moreton Bay College studying for an Associate Diploma of Arts (Fashion).
I then went on to gather experience with Cassandra Designs (party plan), The Works ( locally produced chain store in the 89's/90's, Justine Hope ( own label through Friday's City Market, Surreal ( Stiletto's competition), Stiletto, Ozibiz (mother of the bride, conservative women's wear), Sexy Mama (my own maternity label), Bora (high end Brisbane fashion label). Lately I'm doing Justine Hope by way of Instagram, I'm also helping others get started like Bowerbird, only the occasional advice as these girls are multi-talented without me!
My label is small, I only manufacture limited amounts per style, as I love to do production sewing when it's my own patterns and design, I'm in awe of Irene's Wind and Water too, so making with We Made It, should be fun by all!
